Personnel Training Levels

BASIC CARE
For small/low-risk operations. Includes general treatment and transport guidelines.

  • ALBERTA: EMERGENCY MEDICAL RESPONDER (EMR)
  • BRITISH COLUMBIA: EMERGENCY MEDICAL RESPONDER (EMR)
    • (with Mandatory Occupational First Aid Level III Certification)
      • Primary level for pre-hospital care
      • Undergone a minimum of 130 hours of classroom training
      • Trained to use the fundamental patient assessment techniques for responding to medical and trauma emergencies
      • Trained for Airway Management which includes oxygen, artificial airways, suction devices and assisted ventilation, Pharmacology, glucometric testing, MCI management, traction splints, and pulse oximetry
      • Qualified in use of Automatic External Defibrillators (AED)

INTERMEDIATE CARE

The industry standard for medium volume/high risk. Capable of emergency response and transport with standard drug protocol.

  • ALBERTA: PRIMARY CARE PARAMEDIC (PCP)
  • BRITISH COLUMBIA: PRIMARY CARE PARAMEDIC (PCP)
    • (with Mandatory Occupational First Aid Level III Certification)
      • Intermediate level for pre-hospital care
      • Accomplished the prerequisite EMR program
      • Undergone a minimum of 360 hours of classroom training
      • Completed 40 hours in hospital practical
      • Completed all required calls on Ambulance Practicum
      • Trained in airway management with airway adjuncts, suction, and ventilation, oxygen therapy, spinal immobilization, splinting, medication administration including intravenous infusions, basic diabetic, cardiac, airway and pain control medication
      • Qualified in 3 lead heart monitoring

ADVANCED CARE

Highest level of emergency care for high volume/high risk. Includes leading edge equipment and life-saving medications.

  • ALBERTA: ADVANCED CARE PARAMEDIC (ACP)
  • BRITISH COLUMBIA: ADVANCED CARE PARAMEDIC (ACP)
    • (with Mandatory Occupational First Aid Level III Certification)
      • Advanced level for pre-hospital care
      • EMR and PCP program completed as pre-requisite
      • Completed 2-year diploma graduate program
      • Hospital and ambulance practical completed through both years of education
      • Intermediate Practicum (minimum of 480 hours)
      • Hospital and Community Relations (minimum of 316 hours)
      • Advanced Ambulance Practicum (minimum of 576 hours)
      • A minimum of 1,232 hours of classroom training
      • Graduate with Diploma and Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, International Trauma Life Support (Advanced), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program Certifications
      • Capable of advanced skills including extensive drug therapy treatment for medical and trauma emergencies, advanced airway monitoring and treatment with intubation and medication, and advanced cardiac monitoring and treatment
      • Qualified in 12 lead heart monitoring and interpretation with treatment in the field

MOBILE TREATMENT CENTRE (MTC):

  • Satellite over cellular GPS tracking system
  • Climate controlled patient compartment
  • A roadside emergency kit with a fire extinguisher and spill kit
  • Cellular phone, satellite phone available
  • Road radio with all required frequencies and the Provincial Ambulance frequency
  • Spinal immobilization kit with stretcher

  • Alberta level 3 First Aid Kit
  • High-quality all-weather tires
  • Airway kit with oxygen
  • Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) with heart monitor (BLS or ALS Package dependent)
  • BLS or ALS Airway kit for a higher level of care

    • Diabetic emergency
    • Respiratory emergency
    • Cardiac emergency
    • Severe bleeds
    • Burn kit
    • Spinal injury management
    • Patient vital monitoring equipment
    • Splinting equipment

  • Ability to transport 3 patients
  • Reliable communication between the driver and the MTC back

AMBULANCE (4 WHEEL DRIVE):

All components as listed for the ETV and MTC:

  • 3 lead heart monitor with defibrillating capabilities
  • Additional spinal immobilization equipment
  • Extended equipment for additional care
  • Pediatric capabilities

 

ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT (ALS) PACKAGE:

All components as listed in the ETV and MTC packages plus:

  • 12 lead monitoring to provide a 360° view of the electrical activity of the heart to aid in field diagnosis and treatment
  • Cardiac monitor complete with pacing and cardioversion capabilities
  • Advanced airway management capabilities and equipment
  • Advanced medications for pain control, sedation, paralytics, cardiac and trauma emergencies

 

All of our medical units are new within 3 years, have 4 wheel drive, hold an Alberta Transportation Transport Permit, meet Transport Canada CMVSS rollover protection requirements and are maintained on a strict maintenance schedule.
